Cut Stories

Role: Art Direction, Graphic Design, Motion Design | Company: Cut

For my first project as a junior designer with Cut, I was put on this episode of the series called Cut Stories, where someone is invited to share an interesting story involving themselves. The format of the piece is usually accompanied by graphic design with an art direction that helps tell the story. In this particular one, the amazing Nikkita Oliver came into the studio to tell her story about the time in 2017 when she ran for Mayor of Seattle. With some help from the senior designer Koji, I was tasked with creating the art direction, and executing the animation along with it. I decided to use a gritty, urban style visual language coupled with bold typography to help elevate certain moments of Nikkita’s story, which is one of a grassroots, DIY, for-the-people, everyday person type of candidate attempting their bid for the position of Mayor of Seattle.
